SUMMARY:Williams Tavern Celebrates Again!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a colonial celebration! Enjoy food\, entertainment and stories from what would be America’s oldest tavern. \nOn this 250th Anniversary of our Nation’s Declaration of Independence\, a collaboration of Marlborough entities are re-establishing the Williams Tavern at the Marlborough Country Club on November 16\, 2025\, the anniversary of George Washington’s order to Henry Knox to get the cannons from Fort Ticonderoga. \nHonored guests will include George Washington\, Henry Knox\, Artemus Ward\, William Dawes and other luminaries of the times. They will give a short entertaining history and mingle. Colonial games and entertainment should make a fun evening. \nThe sumptuous colonial fair will include stations serving roast beef\, ham\, turkey\, and flounder with accoutrements. Hors d’oeuvres of oysters\, beets with candied pecans and honey yogurt\, smoked fish dip on rustic chip and duck confit rolled in puff pastry with dried cheeses. Dinner starts with salad and pumpkin soup with candied ginger toasted seeds and johnny cakes. Desserts include jams with sweet bread\, Marlborough pie\, Indian pudding and ice cream made according to Thomas Jefferson’s recipe. \nWilliams Tavern was first opened in 1665 and you will meet members of the Williams family and see memorabilia from the Historical Society. George Washington first stayed there July 2\, 1775 before going to Cambridge to assume command of the newly created Continental Army from Artemus Ward\, whose Ward family was a founder of Marlborough. \nThe committee has worked long and hard\, and requests you consider sponsoring and attending.
