SUMMARY:Labor Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Labor Day Parade will mark the 72nd year that Marlborough hosts the event which\, over the years\, has come to mark the symbolic end-of-summer. \nIn 1952\, the City’s 28th Mayor\, Romeo J. Gadbois\, enlisted the support of the Marlborough Recreation Department under the direction of Louis Ghiloni to organize the parade.  That first year the parade had 12 marching units and launched the annual tradition\, as Mayor Romeo Gadbois wanted “to brighten the lives of those living in Marlborough.” Showcased that first year were the veterans who had recently returned from serving in World War II.  The parade continued to showcase our veterans and grew to include the Drum Corps popular in the 1960’s and 70’s. \nIn recent years\, the parade has grown to include a wide variety of historical re-enactment groups\, fife & drum corps\, military color and honor guard\, drill teams and marching units\, high school and college marching bands and rock bands.  Entries include veterans\, politicians\, home and school groups\, non-profit agencies and more. \nThe Marlborough Labor Day Parade will step off at Noon on Monday\, September 2nd and follow the traditional route starting at Pleasant and Lincoln Streets\, proceeding west onto Lincoln Street\, south onto Broad Street\, east onto West Main Street.  The parade continues onto Main Street and turns south onto Maple\, ending at the intersection of Bolton Street. \nFor more information\, please contact the Mayor’s Office at 508-460-3770

He’s gained notoriety for his fan-favorite role as “the event planner” in the Netflix movie The Sleepover and has appeared in other films including the independent Salesmen\, currently in post-production. Onstage\, he’s headlined at all of the top stages in Boston and around the New England region\, and has performed on MTV‘s Ridiculousness\, Laughs on FOX\, Gotham Comedy Live on HULU. His CD gets frequent play on Sirius Satellite Radio. \nJeff Koen’s family was on America’s Funniest Home Videos and won $10\,000. Can anything be more glamorous than that? Koen often works the clubs and theaters of New England with Juston McKinney and is in constant demand as an actor on independent film projects. He’s known for his portrayal of one of the characters in the on-line cartoon Man Servants\, and for playing the offensive “Uncle Rick” in the 2010 cult film Heavy Times\, which gained him fans from all of the world\, though not very many in any one country. “A guy from Sri Lanka wanted to visit me and stay at my house\,” he said. “All he needed me to do was write a letter to the prime minister.” His work has appeared at many film festivals\, and he’s a regular performer on the Hampton Beach (NH) Comedy Festival.

DESCRIPTION:On September 24 at 7:00 P.M. at the Peter Rice Homestead\, 377 Elm Street\, the Marlborough Historical Society will present “Preacher\, Teacher\, Hater\, Fraud.” This is the story of Mabel MacCory Irwin (1857-1926). She once reached thousands of people a day through her newspaper columns\, commenting on issues surrounding the family such as marriage\, divorce and child rearing. She met with world leaders and advocated for peace amidst the Great War. She once helped run a religious empire that stretched across America. Come and hear the events of her life that turned her into a ‘preacher\, teacher\, hater\, fraud’. The presenter is Charles Trantanella who wrote the book on her. He will also tell you about her ties to Marlborough. This promises to be a very interesting tale. \nThis presentation is free and refreshments are served.
